The End of Work Permits: Indiana’s YES (“Youth Employment System”) Goes Live this Month.

Starting June 2021, Indiana schools will no longer issue work permits for employees under the age of 18. Employers who employ five or more minor employees per location are now required to track and report information about their minor employees via Indiana’s online Youth Employment System.

Though the YES system was activated on June 1, 2021, employers are not required to use it until July 1, 2021. The State wished to give employers a month to create their YES accounts and familiarize themselves with the system. After July 1, use of the YES system is mandatory. Employers will no longer be required to complete the “Intent to Employ” form and schools will no longer issue work permits. Failure to use YES to register minor employees, failure to remove a minor employee from YES once employment as ended, and failure to correct the number of minor employees within the YES system can all result in monetary fines. The transition to the YES system does not change minor employee-work hour restrictions, nor does it change Prohibited and Hazardous Occupation restrictions for minors.
